Greening Gardiner

Gardiner School to Install Photovoltaic System on Earth Day - This School is about to Catch Some Rays

Bear Creek Council's Greening Gardiner Committee has laid the groundwork for a 12-solar-panel photovoltaic (PV) array to be installed on the Gardiner school today, Earth Day 2009. The 2.28 kilowatt system will be installed by Independent Power Systems (IPS) out of Bozeman, Montana and Boulder, Colorado. IPS installed the PV systems at the Bozeman Library, the Bozeman CoOp, Coors Field in Denver and helped to build out a solar neighborhood in Colorado.

IPS will arrive at the school at 8 am to start setting the racks for the solar panels. With 12 panels and 12 grades in the school, Gardiner students will come out one grade at a time throughout the morning so that each student in each class (we'll combine Kindergarten and 1st Grade) can sign the back of "their" solar panel and take a look at some solar toys and displays that will be setup. The toy solar-car drag racers are pretty cool and IPS is going to put together a solar powered water fountain and the Industrial Technology class has some school-built solar demos as well.

The panels will start to go up on the roof at 10 am and the Industrial Technology students will help with the install.

The Student Council, with help from Yellowstone National Park Lodges, is mobilizing the student body and town for a massive cleanup to take place from 12:30 to 2 pm. Gardiner residents please break out your push brooms and bring them to the school by 12:30 or join in around town wherever you see a group of students between 12:30 and 2. Garbage bags will be provided. At 2 the school and the public are invited to the school to learn about some cutting edge projects the Industrial Tech students are working on, learn about the photovoltaic system and help us cut the ribbon to start catching some rays.

Real-time and historical performance of the system will be displayed on the web here. Tune in after 3ish today to see the start of an era of solar power at the Gardiner school.

It's starting to get light out there. The sky is clear. It should be a very good day.
